Distribute Food - Nuestra Casa
Feb 01, 2023 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Sign up at: https://forms.gle/wHXXctxesMyrG2ma6

On the 1st Wednesday of each month, our Palo Alto Rotary Club helps Nuestra Casa distribute food to food insecure families at the Rise City Church, 1305 Middlefield Road, Redwood City. Up to 5 of us will volunteer from 2:00-4:00 and/or 4:00-6:00. Please wear a face mask and your Palo Alto Rotary Club t-shirt if you have one. This activity is outdoors, under canopy tents. Neighborhood parking has a 2-hour limit, so if you volunteer for both shifts, you may park in the church parking lot.

Nuestra Casa is a past Palo Alto Rotary grant recipient. Their food distribution program serves 6,000 people per month in East Palo Alto and Redwood City. They recover healthy, high-quality food from distributors around the Bay Area. This reduces peoples’ grocery bills so they can use that money for rent, utilities, or transportation. It reduces the stigma and transportation barriers people face when using local food pantries. By reducing food waste, we're also reducing greenhouse gases. Learn more at https://nuestracasa.org/

Jeb Barnes, Prof. Political Science, USC

The Supreme Court: Court of Law or Court of Politics?

Feb 06, 2023

Jeb Barnes is Professor of Political Science at the University of Southern California, studying the intersection between law, politics and public policy.

After graduating from the University of Chicago Law School and clerking for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Dr. Barnes practiced as a commercial litigator in Boston and San Francisco. In 1994, he left the practice of law to pursue a doctorate in political science at the University of California, Berkeley.

Barnes joined the USC faculty in 2001, where he teaches classes in law, American politics and public policy. His mixed-method research has looked at bias in media coverage of litigation, lawyers’ ethical duties to confront misleading press accounts of the legal system and how the filing of lawsuits influences attitudes toward claimants and their underlying claims.

He has published extensively on topics ranging from the asbestos crisis and litigation reform to disability rights and research methods. Recent articles are titled “Untangling the Concept of Adversarial Legalism,” and “The Politics of Litigation,” and " Conservative Supreme Court justices disagree about how to read the law".

Where we meet

Our Club holds a weekly luncheon meeting on Mondays at the Elks’ Event Center, 4249 El Camino Real, Palo Alto, CA.  Doors open at noon and lunch is available starting at 12:15pm. Our formal meeting starts at 12:30 pm.

To create an environment where people feel comfortable attending in-person, our greeters will be checking vaccine status at the door.  If you are joining our in-person meeting for the first time, please bring your ID and your vaccine card or a photo of the card with you.  Masks are not required per current County guidelines.  Buffet lunch is $25 and “just coffee” attendance is $5.

We continue to provide a zoom option.  If you would like to join by zoom, use our contact form to request the Zoom meeting information.
